What We Learned
1. The eye protection incident was preventable. We didn’t enforce eye protection. We do now. Every patient gets eye protection. Every time.
2. The photosensitivity screening caught a dangerous case. A patient on Accutane didn’t mention it. We asked specifically. We delayed treatment until after Accutane course. Could have caused serious skin damage.
3. The contraindication checklist saved us liability. We now have patients sign a contraindication checklist before treatment. It documents screening. Protects us if someone claims injury.
4. The staff training reduced incidents. We trained all staff on safety protocols. Incidents dropped to zero. Training cost: 2 hours. Worth it.
5. The emergency protocol is ready. We have a posted emergency protocol: eye exposure = flush with water for 15 minutes, seek medical attention. Haven’t needed it yet. Ready if we do.
For LED therapy practitioners, safety is non-negotiable. Screen patients, enforce eye protection, know contraindications, and train staff. The cost of safety is low compared to the cost of an incident.
