How to Handle LED Therapy Patient Expectations
The Expectation Problem
LED therapy isn’t magic. Results take time. But patients often expect instant results because:
Setting Realistic Expectations
The consultation process:
Before treatment, we explain:
1. “LED therapy works with your body’s natural processes”
2. “Results build over time, not overnight”
3. “Consistency is key — we recommend 2-3 sessions per week initially”
4. “Most patients see improvement in 4-8 weeks”
5. “Individual results vary based on condition, skin type, and other factors”
Written expectations:
We provide a one-page “What to Expect” sheet:
Common Expectation Questions
“How many treatments will I need?”
It depends on your condition. For skin rejuvenation, typically 8-12 sessions initially. For acne, 10-15 sessions. For pain, 6-8 sessions.
“When will I see results?”
Most patients see improvement in 4-8 weeks. Some see results as early as 2 weeks. Some take longer.
“Are results permanent?”
Results can last 3-6 months without maintenance. Regular maintenance sessions help preserve results.
“Does it hurt?”
No. LED therapy is painless. Some patients feel mild warmth. If discomfort occurs, we adjust the treatment.
Documenting Expectations
We document patient expectations:
1. Initial consultation notes
2. Patient-signed expectation sheet
3. Baseline photos (with consent)
This protects us if a patient claims “it didn’t work.” We can show we set realistic expectations.
What We Learned
1. The negative review cost us $500 in marketing to offset it. One negative review drove away 3-5 potential patients. Now we invest time in expectation-setting upfront.
2. The written expectation sheet reduced complaints. Patients who signed the expectation sheet were less likely to complain. They knew what to expect.
3. The “before” photos with expectations were key. We show patients their baseline photos and explain: “This is where you’re starting. We’re aiming for this.” Clear targets = clear expectations.
4. The individual variation disclaimer helped. “Individual results vary” sounds like a cop-out, but it’s true. Some patients see results faster. Some slower. Setting a range helps.
5. The maintenance discussion upfront reduced churn. We explain maintenance from day one: “You’ll need monthly sessions to maintain results.” Patients who understand this commit to long-term care.
For LED therapy clinics, patient expectations are critical. Set them clearly, document them, and follow up regularly. A patient who understands the process is a patient who stays.
