How to Conduct Environmental Testing for LED Therapy Devices
We shipped LED masks to a customer in Saudi Arabia. The masks arrived with cracked enclosures. The temperature during shipping exceeded 50°C. We hadn’t tested for high-temperature exposure. After that, we implemented environmental testing. Here’s what to test.
The Environmental Tests
| Test | Description | Standard | Conditions |
| High temperature | Test at elevated temperature | IEC 60068-2-2 | +55°C for 48 hours |
| Low temperature | Test at low temperature | IEC 60068-2-1 | -10°C for 48 hours |
| Temperature cycling | Cycle between high and low temperature | IEC 60068-2-14 | -10°C to +55°C, 10 cycles |
| Humidity | Test at high humidity | IEC 60068-2-78 | 93% RH at +40°C for 48 hours |
| Vibration | Simulate transportation vibration | IEC 60068-2-6 | 10-500Hz, 30 minutes per axis |
| Drop test | Drop from various heights | IEC 60068-2-31 | 1 meter onto concrete |
| IP rating (water/dust resistance) | Test for ingress protection | IEC 60529 | IP20 (no protection) to IP68 (waterproof) |
The high temperature test is essential for shipping and storage. Products may be exposed to high temperatures in shipping containers, warehouses, or hot climates. Test at +55°C or higher.
The humidity test is important for LED therapy devices. High humidity can cause condensation, which affects electronics. Test at 93% RH to simulate worst-case conditions.
The Testing Process
| Step | Action |
| 1. Define test plan | Which tests to conduct, test conditions, pass criteria |
| 2. Prepare samples | 3-5 units for testing |
| 3. Conduct tests | In-house or send to test lab |
| 4. Evaluate results | Did the product pass? Were there failures? |
| 5. Document | Test report with photos, data, conclusions |
| 6. Redesign if needed | If failures occurred, redesign and retest |
The test lab cost is $2,000-5,000 for a full environmental test suite. In-house testing requires environmental chambers ($5,000-20,000 equipment cost). For small companies, using a test lab is more cost-effective.
What We’ve Learned
1. The Saudi Arabia shipment failure cost us $5,000 in replacements. We hadn’t tested for high temperature. Now we test at +55°C for all products.
2. The humidity test caught a condensation issue. Our LED driver had condensation on the PCB at 93% RH. We added conformal coating to protect the PCB. The redesign cost $0.50/unit but prevented failures.
3. The vibration test simulates shipping. We simulate truck transportation (vibration for 30 minutes per axis). This caught a loose connector issue. We added a strain relief to the cable.
Environmental testing for LED therapy devices requires high/low temperature testing, temperature cycling, humidity testing, vibration testing, and drop testing. Test at realistic worst-case conditions to prevent field failures.
